New pre-school nursery, Haddington, East Lothian

New pre-school nursery, Haddington

client Genesis (J&T) Ltd (Trading as Happy Days Nurseries)

This is our proposal for a nursery school on the outskirts of Haddington, East Lothian. It is located in the large, mature garden of a private house. The house was to be remodelled to house the 0-2 year olds and a new timber building proposed in the woodland behind for the 3-5 year olds. The T-shaped new building, positioned some way from the house to break down the nursery buildings into smaller, domestic sized units, is designed with a fully glazed entrance lobby where the two wings meet. The structure is a simple timber frame, with the rhythm expressed internally using exposed timber cross-ties, and externally by dividing the Scottish larch-clad elevation into bays. The side elevations of the new building have windows at various heights according to the age of the children using it. The end gables are fully glazed giving splendid views over the surrounding garden and a lot of natural light to the classrooms.

Parents and children arriving on foot or on bicycle have their own dedicated paths to the entrance, separating them from the vehicular access to the car park.
